  1. When Bolton A entertained Brough A in Division One,

    Brough took a 4-1 lead in mixed, following up with three doubles for their 7-2 victory.
    Mark Barrow and Nicola Elliott were first on court, versus Robert Hutchinson & Sarah Bowman. Mark & Nicola took the first 15-9, then Robert & Sarah clinched the next two, 17-14, 15-9. This event lasted an hour! Third mixed was another very tight game. Brian Litster & Hazel McAleese, Bolton, won a very close first end 17-16, then Richard Balmer & Becky Wolstenhome the second, 15-11, the Bolton pair finally triumphing 7-15.
    All the doubles were decided in two sets. Top men Mark & Brian beat Matthew Hopkins & Richard 15-9, 15-8 for Bolton’s second point.
    Vicky Addison, Sarah Bowman & Robert Hutchinson remained unbeaten for Brough.
    In Division Two, Gilcrux travelled all the way to Brough B to be vanquished 9-0, all events being two-setters. Closest game of the night was Debbie Barr & Willie Lockhart’s 15-8, 15-9 win over Dougie Rumney & Anneka Mounsey.
    When Blencowe C encountered Brough C it proved a very close match indeed. Blencowe C went ahead 4-1 in mixed while Brough won three doubles, resulting in a 5-4 victory for Blencowe. Graham Lightfoot won all his games for Blencowe.
    Patrick Wolstenholme & Dawn Witterick won the single mixed point for Brough with a 15-12, 13-15, 15-12 victory over Simon Broadbridge & Jeanne Gordon.
    Second ladies’ also went the full distance: Val Urwin & Jeanne took the first 15-6, but Alice Fawcett & Elaine Potter fought back to win 15-11, 15-5.
    Langwathby played Appleby B in their second encounter of the season. Langwathby’s Matthew Wilson & Katie Mason were involved in both Langwathby’s points. They lost the first set 5-15 to Gary Trevaskis & Debbie Snelson, but went on to win 15-10, 15-11. Gary was involved in all the three-enders. He and Debbie beat Andrew Thompson & Ruth Jackson 15-3, 8-15, 15-11. The most exciting game of the night was second men’s: Chris Swinbank & Gary defeated Mark James & Andrew, 15-4, 11-15, 17-16. Final score: 7-2 to Appleby B.
    It was a 6-0 win for Blencowe A versus their B team in the Doubles League. Only one event went the distance , when Jonny Fuller & Christian Morley defeated Amy Dickinson & Linda Jefferson 15-6, 8-15, 15-2.

  2. Modest Gilcrux First to Win a Game against High Flying Appleby B!

    Brough A won all the mixed and both ladies’ doubles for their 7-2 victory away at Blencowe A in Division One.
    Best mixed event was between third couples, Richard Balmer & Becky Wolstenholme winning 15-12, 17-16, over Sam Winder & Pam Smithies. David Bowman & Sam, Blencowe, overcame Robert Hutchinson & Richard 17-15, 15-10.
    Gilcrux entertained Appleby B in Division Two, with the away side triumphing 8-1.
    Henry Airey & Sarah Hilton starred in the only three-setter, defeating Gary Trevaskis & Debbie Snelson in a really close battle. Henry and Sarah won 15-7, lost 15-17, then clinched the third 15-11, to score Gilcrux’ single point, the only point Appleby has lost this season!
    Langwathby defeated Brough C 9-0. Only one event went the full distance: second ladies, Ruth Jackson & Lisa Fleming overcame Elaine Potter & Alice Fawcett in a close 15-13, 10-15, 15-13.
    It was a 5-1 victory for Appleby doubles team away to Greta, all events being decided in two ends. Andrew Pepper & Arran Davies scored Greta’s consolation point, 15-9, 17-14, against Phil Armitstead & Dawn Westgarth.
    The following week Appleby notched up their third victory in the Doubles League, this time 6-0 versus Blencowe B.
    David Bowman & Amy Dickinson, Blencowe, were involved in both three-enders. In the first, up against Alex Dalton & Mike Dunbobbin, they lost 15-11, 8-15, 4-15. In the next, versus Phil Armitstead & Andrew Swinbank, they won 15-14, only to lose the next two 10-15, 8-15.
    Bolton A hosted Blencowe B in the final match of the first round of the Ken Shaw Handicap Tournament. After several close games, the result was Bolton 258, Blencowe 149 plus their handicap of 155, a total of 304, so Blencowe went through by 46 points.
    The draw for the quarter-finals is as follows:
    Appleby A v Brough C
    Gilcrux v Phoenix
    Langwathby v Appleby B
    Brough B v Blencowe B.

  3. Gilcrux win Thriller!
    When Brough C entertained Blencowe B in Division Two, only one event went the distance: second men, Will Richardson & Simon Fawcett, Brough, lost 1-15 to Tom Bennett & Christian Morley, then Will & Simon took the second 15-2. Blencowe came back to win the final set 15-6.
    Top ladies, Dawn Witterick & Elaine Potter notched up Brough’s sole point, defeating Gail Eastham & Carol Edmondson 15-13, 15-6.
    Final score: Brough C 1 – Blencowe B 8.
    It was a 5-4 win for Gilcrux when they hosted close rivals Brough C. Brough took a 3-2 lead in mixed, but Gilcrux won three doubles.
    Third mixed was really tight: Harry Wharton & Elaine Potter, Brough, won 17-14, lost 5-15, but eventually triumphed 17-15 over Carl Blacklock & Sally Reed. Harry, teaming up with James Bowman, also starred in the only doubles three-ender, losing 13-15, but battling on to a 15-4, 17-15 victory over Henry Airey & Carl. Second ladies was another close affair, with Sarah Hilton & Sally beating Alice Fawcett & Elaine, 15-12, 17-14.
    When Blencowe C played Brough B, only one event went all the way. Alan Wilson & Heidi Branthwaite, Brough, recovered from a 13-15 loss, to triumph 15-8, 15-10, ensuring a 9-0 victory for the away team.
    Appleby A make it four out of four with their latest 7-2 victory at Greta in Division One.
    Andy Carey & Nicky Sleath scored one of Greta’s points, recovering from 9-15 down to defeat Phil Armitstead & Dawn Westgarth 15-7, 17-14.
    Andrew Swinbank was involved in both men’s three-setters, first with Phil, overcoming Arran Davies & Andy 17-15, 10-15, 15-5, then with James Bowness, beating Andrew Pepper & Arran 15-1, 13-15, 15-5.
    Top ladies, Megan Saxton & Nicky gained Greta’s second point, 15-13, 15-7, versus Amy Swinbank & Dawn.
    Phoenix forged ahead 3-2 in mixed, then took both ladies’ for a 5-4 victory over Blencowe A. Janice Walker remained undefeated for Phoenix.
    Jonny Fuller & Linda Jefferson, Blencowe, were involved in both three-setters, succumbing 7-15, 15-13, 9- 15, to Andy & Debbie Lovatt. Up against Ian Livingston & Jane Durnin, they lost the first 6-15, but fought back to win 17-15, 15-9.
    Second men’s was won 15-6, 10-15, 15-8, by David Bowman & Sam Winder, Blencowe, versus Carl Heathcote & Andy.

  4. Division One side, Brough A, started their season off with a home fixture against Phoenix.

    Brough won the only mixed three-setter for their sole point, when Sarah Bowman and Robert Hutchinson defeated Ian Livingston & Jane Durnin, 16-17, 15-3, 15-3. Robert was also involved in Brough’s second point, partnered by Richard Balmer, to beat Andy Lovatt & Ian, 12-15, 15-9, 15-9.
    Final score: Brough A 2 – Phoenix 7.
    When Division Two’s Bolton B travelled to Appleby B, Ronnie Potts & Emma Thorpe took Alex Dalton & Debbie Snelson all the way. Ronnie & Emma won the first 15-7, lost a tight second end 11-15, only to be vanquished 0-15 in the third. Alex and Debbie beat Paul Fleming and Lynn Barnes 15-11, 15-4. Appleby went on to win the match 9-0.
    Brough B triumphed 7-2 at Langwathby. Matthew Wilson and Katie Mason were responsible for both Langwathby’s points, first defeating Willie Lockhart & Dawn Witterick 15-8, 15-11, then David Wheatley & Hannah Shuttleworth 15-5, 15-4.
    Two doubles went the distance, best being top ladies’, with Lisa Fleming & Katie pressing Heidi Branthwaite & Hannah all the way, but finally losing 10-15, 15-12, 11-15.
    It was a 5-1 score line in favour of home team Blencowe A, when they came up against Phoenix in the doubles league. However, there were plenty of close events, including three three-setters.
    To begin with, Sam Winder & Jonny Fuller, Blencowe, lost 1-15 to Craig Allinson & John Murchinson, but just managed to clinch the next two 17-14, 15-11! Craig & John overcame David Morley & David Bowman 7-15, 15-9, 17-14, in another exciting game, to notch up a single point for Phoenix.
