  1. Closest Match Yet!

    When Blencowe A hosted Appleby in Division One, Appleby took a 4-1 lead in the mixed, then clinched two doubles for their 6-3 victory. Sam Winder was involved in all three of Blencowe’s points.
    First game on court was the only mixed three-setter: Phil Armitstead & Dawn Westgarth won 21-13, lost 19-21, but came back to win 21-14 against David Bowman and Fiona Wilson.
    Top ladies’ proved very close: Zoe Dalton & Sheila Westgarth, Appleby, won 20-22,21-14, 21-19, against Alisha Eastham and Fiona.
    Brough B entertained Langwathby in Division Two, and a close match ensued. Six events went all the way!
    Top mixed proved very close. Matthew Wilson and Katie Mason, Langwathby, won 21-13 against James Bowman & Becky Wolstenholme, only to lose the next 18-21, but came back to win the final set 21-18.
    Mark James, in very good form, won all his events. In second men’s , he teamed up with Andrew Thompson to beat David Wheatley and William Richardson, 24-22,19-21,22-20.
    Second ladies’ also went to three, with Ruth Jackson & Sophie Hathor, Langwathby, getting the edge over Kim Beaumont and Alice Fawcett, 19-21, 21-14, 21-19.
    Final score: Brough B 3 – Langwathby 6.
    It was a convincing 9-0 win for Phoenix when they travelled to Bolton A. Several events were close, but Phoenix definitely had the edge.
    Second game on court was the only three-setter. Ian Livingston and Jane Durnin overcame Richard Forrester and Susan Thorpe, 21-18, 22-24, 21-17.
    Brian Litster & Richard, Bolton, lost 18-21, 21-23, to Andy Lovatt and Craig Allinson.
    The closest match so far this season was between Greta and Blencowe B in the Doubles League: 3-3 in events, 7-7 in sets and 237 all in points, a completely even draw!
    First game on court involved Andy Seaton & Jason Stuart for Greta. They won 19-21, 21-11, 21-8, over Tom Bennett & Graham Lightfoot. Second game on also went the distance, with Matt Hamblin & Isaac Pullan, Blencowe, coming out on top, versus Olivia Harrison & Nicky Sleath, 16-21, 21-19, 21-11.

  2. Close Encounter in the Doubles League
    as Phoenix draw with Appleby.
    In Division One, Brough A entertained Blencowe A and ran out 7-2 winners.
    Brough took a 4-1 lead in mixed. David Bowman and Fiona Wilson overcame Richard Balmer and Sarah Bowman 21-10, 21-16. But Simon Dinsley & Vicky Addison beat them 21-5, 19-21, 21-13, in the closest mixed of the night.
    Top Men’s went to Brough, as David Wheatley & Simon beat Sam Winder & David Bowman, 16-21, 21-18, 21-13.
    Second ladies’ was a close contest, with Hannah Shuttleworth & Sarah overcoming Carol Edmondson & Alisha Eastham, 24-22, 21-19.
    Blencowe B continue in winning ways with their latest 8-1 triumph over Brough B in Division Two. Brough’s top lady, Dawn Witterick, was forced to concede two of her events due to injury.
    Two events went the distance. James Bowman & Becky Wolstenholme, Brough, beat Tom Bennett & Gail Wills, 16-21, 23-21, 21-18. In the other, Matt Hamblin & Pam Smithies, Blencowe, won 21-12, 19-21, 21-13, against Willie Richardson & Kim Beaumont.
    In the Doubles League, Phoenix versus Appleby proved a very close match, 3-3 in events, Appleby winning 8-7 in sets, and Phoenix on points, 282-274.
    Ian Livingston and Andy Lovatt beat Ethan Dunbobbin & Dawn Westgarth, 21-15, 15-21, 21-14. Phil Armitstead & Laura Westgarth, Appleby , beat Craig Allinson & John Murchison. 21-17, 22-24, 21-13.

  3. Close Encounter between Langwathby and Blencowe B!

    Appleby ran out 7-2 winners over Brough A in Division One. Alex Dalton & Laura Westgarth won all their events.
    Top men’s was exciting, with Alex Dalton & Andrew Swinbank, Appleby, overcoming Simon Dinsley & Robert Hutchinson, 22-20, 18-21, 21-12. But best game of the night was a mixed, in which Vicky Addison & Simon lost 20-22 to Phil Armitstead & Dawn Westgarth, but took the next two 30-28, 21-18!
    Six events went the distance when Langwathby entertained Blencowe B in Division Two! Blencowe’s reserve player, Pauline Goad, was involved in three of these. Her mixed, versus Andrew Thompson & Ruth Jackson, proved closest, as she won with Graham Lightfoot, 21-13, 19-21, 23-21!
    Mark James & Matthew Wilson, Langwathby, came up against Matt Hamblin & Tom Bennett, losing the first 14-21, before turning the game around to win 21-14, 21-17.
    Gail Wills, Blencowe, & Mark James, Langwathby, remained undefeated.
    Final Score: Langwathby 4 – Blencowe B 5!
    Blencowe A notched up their second win in the Doubles League, defeating Greta 4-2. Blencowe forged ahead into a 2-0 lead, and the remaining events were split for their 4-2 victory.
    David Morley & Ian Parker enjoyed a good 18-21, 21-13, 21-12 win over Jason Stewart & Andy Seaton. Then Jason & Andy beat Sam Winder & Jonny Fuller, 14-21, 21-9, 21-15.
    Ian Parker remained unbeaten.
    It was a 6-0 victory for Phoenix when they played away at Blencowe B. Andy Lovatt & Ian Livingston were involved in both three-setters. In the first, they defeated Matt Hamblin & Martin Brammer, 21-9, 20-22, 21-14. In their second, they overcame Tom Bennett & Graham Lightfoot, 21 -11, 17-21, 21-13.

  4. Phoenix End Appleby’s Six Year Winning Streak!

    It was a 7-2 victory for Brough A when they entertained Bolton A in Division One. Bolton took a 2-1 lead, but Brough won the remaining games in two ends.
    Best game of the night featured Mark Barrow & Nicola Elliott, Bolton, overcoming Robert Hutchinson & Sarah Bowman 21-13, 11-21, 23-21.
    The following night, Bolton A hosted Blencowe A in a battle that included five three-setters, four of which went to Blencowe. Sam Winder, Blencowe, and Nicola Elliott, Bolton, remained unbeaten.
    Mark and Nicola won the first event of the evening 21-15, 15-21, 21-12, against David Bowman and Carol Edmondson, but David and Carol wreaked their revenge, beating Richard Forrester and Susan Thorpe 15-21, 21-15, 23-21.
    Blencowe’s third mixed pair, Sam Winder & Alisha Eastham, overcame Brian Litster & Hazel McAleese 18-21, 21-16, 21-13.
    Final Score: Bolton 3 – Blencowe A 6.
    Phoenix ended Appleby’s unbeaten run of six years in the mixed league, the same team avenging themselves, as Appleby beat them in the 2016/17 season by the same 5-4 score! Three events went the distance and Phoenix won them all.
    Ethan and Chelsea Dunbobbin, Appleby, put up a good show against Andy & Debbie Lovatt, eventually losing 17-21, 21-18, 17-21. All the doubles were split.
    Division Two’s Bolton B travelled away to local village rivals Langwathby. Bolton went 3-0 up, but Langwathby fought back to 3-2 in the mixed, then Bolton took both ladies and second men’s for their 6-3 victory.
    Andrew Thompson and Ruth Jackson had two close mixed. They lost the first to Ronnie Potts & Lynn Barnes, 18-21, 22-20, 17-21, but they overcame Ben Barnes and Marilyn Wood, 21-11, 13-21, 21-14.
    Then, in men’s, Andrew teamed up with Mark James to win the first set 21-13 versus Adam Elliott & Ben, but the Bolton pair turned the tables to win 25-23, 21-15.
    Appleby’s Doubles team played Blencowe B and ran out 6-0 winners, all games being decided in two ends.

  5. Blencowe B Aim High!

    In Division One, Appleby played Bolton A and ran out 8-1 winners.
    Second ladies, Susan Thorpe and Hazel McAleese, beat Dawn Westgarth & Zoe Dalton 21-19, but the Appleby pair came back to win 21-12, 21-9. Top men’s was close: Alex Dalton & Andrew Swinbank overcame Brian Litster & Mark Barrow, 25-27,21-8, 21-11. Third mixed couple, Brian and Hazel, notched up Bolton’s consolation point with a 21-11, 19-21, 21-16 win over Andrew and Zoe.
    Sam Winder was on top form when Blencowe A entertained Phoenix, and was involved in all three of Blencowe’s points. Closest was third mixed, partnering Carol Edmondson, to win 22-20, 18-21, 21-18, versus Andy & Debbie Lovatt. Craig Allinson & Janice Walker, Phoenix, won the first set 21-13, then Jonny Fuller & Alisha Eastham took the second, 21-13, with Craig & Janice emerging victorious in the third, 24-22. Both ladies’ went to Phoenix.
    Final score: Blencowe 3 – Phoenix 6.
    Blencowe B started their season on the front foot with a resounding 8-1 victory over Bolton B. Two mixed events went the full distance. Graham Lightfoot & Fiona Wilson won 22-24, 21-16, 21-12, over Paul Fleming & Lynn Barnes. Third mixed pairing, Matt Hamblin & Pam Smithies overcame Ben Barnes & Becca Brabbins, 21-10, 17-21, 21-16.
    Top ladies, Becca & Lynn lost the first set 21-23 to Gail Wills and Pam, but went on to win, 21-14, 21-17, for Bolton’s single point. Second ladies’ also went to three. Pam and Fiona lost 19-21, but eventually won a very close contest 21-15, 21-19, versus Val Urwin and Becca.
    Next, Blencowe B travelled to Gilcrux for a 9-0 victory. Henry Airey featured in both three-enders. He and Sarah Hilton lost 16-21, 21-11,11-21, to Graham Lightfoot & Fiona Wilson. Then, in men’s doubles, Carl Blacklock & Henry lost 16-21, 22-20, 18-21, to Matt Hamblin & Graham in the best game of the night.

  6. When Bolton A entertained Brough A in Division One,

    Brough took a 4-1 lead in mixed, following up with three doubles for their 7-2 victory.
    Mark Barrow and Nicola Elliott were first on court, versus Robert Hutchinson & Sarah Bowman. Mark & Nicola took the first 15-9, then Robert & Sarah clinched the next two, 17-14, 15-9. This event lasted an hour! Third mixed was another very tight game. Brian Litster & Hazel McAleese, Bolton, won a very close first end 17-16, then Richard Balmer & Becky Wolstenhome the second, 15-11, the Bolton pair finally triumphing 7-15.
    All the doubles were decided in two sets. Top men Mark & Brian beat Matthew Hopkins & Richard 15-9, 15-8 for Bolton’s second point.
    Vicky Addison, Sarah Bowman & Robert Hutchinson remained unbeaten for Brough.
    In Division Two, Gilcrux travelled all the way to Brough B to be vanquished 9-0, all events being two-setters. Closest game of the night was Debbie Barr & Willie Lockhart’s 15-8, 15-9 win over Dougie Rumney & Anneka Mounsey.
    When Blencowe C encountered Brough C it proved a very close match indeed. Blencowe C went ahead 4-1 in mixed while Brough won three doubles, resulting in a 5-4 victory for Blencowe. Graham Lightfoot won all his games for Blencowe.
    Patrick Wolstenholme & Dawn Witterick won the single mixed point for Brough with a 15-12, 13-15, 15-12 victory over Simon Broadbridge & Jeanne Gordon.
    Second ladies’ also went the full distance: Val Urwin & Jeanne took the first 15-6, but Alice Fawcett & Elaine Potter fought back to win 15-11, 15-5.
    Langwathby played Appleby B in their second encounter of the season. Langwathby’s Matthew Wilson & Katie Mason were involved in both Langwathby’s points. They lost the first set 5-15 to Gary Trevaskis & Debbie Snelson, but went on to win 15-10, 15-11. Gary was involved in all the three-enders. He and Debbie beat Andrew Thompson & Ruth Jackson 15-3, 8-15, 15-11. The most exciting game of the night was second men’s: Chris Swinbank & Gary defeated Mark James & Andrew, 15-4, 11-15, 17-16. Final score: 7-2 to Appleby B.
    It was a 6-0 win for Blencowe A versus their B team in the Doubles League. Only one event went the distance , when Jonny Fuller & Christian Morley defeated Amy Dickinson & Linda Jefferson 15-6, 8-15, 15-2.
